Self-styled as a peacekeeping force, the Global Defense Forces are well-trained, and well-funded, and specialize in analyzing and shutting down battlefield threats. On the field, the GDF use their advanced communications technology to keep one step ahead of the enemy.
Campaign description

The Global Defense Forces,[a] or GDF, is an international military alliance formed by the surviving governments of Earth following the aftermath of the Third World War. By 1997, the GDF are the maintainers of the majority of the Tempest sites around the world and are in conflict with the Tempest Dynasty over control of the resource.[1]

Founded upon the principles of cooperation, unity, and safeguarding world peace, the GDF is Earth's largest military organization by 1997 and is a combination of the world's highly trained armed forces. Its prominent member states include the United States of America, Canada, and the nations of Western Europe. The GDF relies on their advanced communications technology, such as SyComm, to keep one step ahead of the enemy. Beyond its military function, the GDF also allocates resources in scientific research, space exploration and medical science for both military and civilian applications.[2]

The GDF fashions themselves as a global peacekeeping force. Their standard units sport an appearance akin to gendarmerie and riot police forces. The GDF approach to armed conflict involves surveillance, intelligence gathering, information warfare and crowd control, transitioning to employing heavy ordnance to neutralize higher threats.[3]

The GDF are one of the three playable factions in Tempest Rising.

History

The Global Defense Forces were formed in 1988 from the remnants of the Union of Allied Nations. Its leadership consisted of a Board of Directors, which was infiltrated by a secret organization who installed advisors under the Directors.[4]

Technology level

The GDF relies on their advanced communications and high-tech equipment to give them an edge on the battlefield.

  • Artificial intelligence: GDF commanders are supported by Scopes, a computerized adjutant that serves as battlefield adviser.
  • Communications technology: Through SyComm, the GDF collects and processes tactical data to determine the best response to emerging threats on the battlefield.
  • Anti-riot equipment: As the GDF takes on the role of peacekeepers, they make use of crowd control tactics to put down unrest. The Riot Trooper, Riot Van, and Peacekeeper utilize equipment that stuns and suppresses enemy units.
  • Drone technology: The GDF makes liberal use of aerial drones in both their construction process and combat.
  • Hover vehicles: Hovering vehicles are employed such as the Shieldmaiden and Scrambler, known for their high mobility and maneuverability on even the roughest terrain in combat. Hover vehicles do not set off mines and cannot crush nor be crushed.[5]
  • Stealth technology: With optical camouflage, units such as the Sniper and Drone Mauler are rendered virtually undetectable to enemy eyes.

Gameplay

The Global Defense Forces are a faction that prefers mobility, positional combat, and selective strikes coupled with advanced Networking and Comms Comms technology in order to disrupt and defeat the opposing force.

The GDF have a unique secondary resource called Intel Intel which is obtained through combat and can be spent on unit abilities or new units and structures.[6] At the start, GDF passively generates Intel from their Construction Yard but can obtain even more Intel through constructing Intel-generating buildings, killing Marked Marked targets, or capturing enemy buildings with Engineers.[7]

Behind the scenes

Although there has been comparisons made between the Global Defense Forces and the Global Defense Initiative from the Command & Conquer series, the GDF is an existing original faction that has appeared in several of 3D Realms' previous games.[8] Its name and logo were designed in its original incarnation as the Earth Defense Forces for the Duke Nukem series back in 1995.[9]
