Specialist
In Tempest Rising, 
specialists are named individual characters who in gameplay are infantry units analogous to commandos or hero units in other real-time strategy games. Specialists can perform unique abilities on the battlefield.
Each faction has 5 specialists that can be called into battle, and in the campaigns players have to earn the trust of up to 3 specialists.[1] Each specialist has their own storyline arc and choosing to work with one specialist may lock the player out of using another for the rest of the campaign.[2] In some missions, players may be in command of one or more specialists.[3]
Specialists have their own population limit:
- In the campaign, only 1 of any specialists can be present on the map at a time.[4]
- In skirmish and multiplayer, the player can train a total of 3 of the tier 2 specialists in any combination, and 1 of any tier 3 specialists.[5]

Behind the scenes
Each specialist is designed to have different levels of micromanagement for most effective use. For instance, the Sniper is intended to have high individual interaction whereas the Comms Officer can simply be mixed into a group as a supporting unit.[6]
