Iceland

We have routine Tempest harvesting all over the grid, but some of the lights are going out, starting from the East coast. If you ask me, I reckon it looks deliberate. I want you to do a sweep of the area, flush out any Dynasty forces you might find. Remind them that the GDF isn't to be trifled with.

This is the first mission of the GDF campaign in Tempest Rising.[1]

Events

Background

GDF's Tempest harvesting operations in Fljótsdalshérað, Iceland have been disrupted with interference by the Tempest Dynasty being suspected. For their first assignment, Colonel Fisher tasked the new GDF commander to secure the area, recommence harvesting operations, and eliminate any of the Dynasty's forces encountered.

An airborne assault was launched in the area, though several of the Globetrotter transports were then shot down by Dynasty anti-air, leaving survivors stranded deep in enemy territory.

The Mission

Paratroopers incoming, good luck out there!
—Globetrotter pilot

A squad of Field Scouts and Drone Operators were paradropped onto the outskirts of a Dynasty supply outpost, where they encountered light resistance. After pushing through and taking out a SAM site, the squad was aided with two airdropped Sentinel Scout Cars and the Riot Medic.

The GDF force continued down the road to investigate for more Dynasty encampments, where they linked up with a stranded group of Grenadiers, whom were now under fire from Dynasty troops. After assisting their comrades, the GDF force moved on, taking out a Dynasty outpost that had a Radar Station and Tempest Rig.

The GDF force linked up with an MCV near two Tempest fields, where a base was established. After fending off the Dynasty's attacks and building up a sufficient force, the GDF launched their assault on the main Dynasty base. An airstrike was called in to blow up the heavily-defended gate entrance, allowing for the GDF to push through and demolish the Dynasty Construction Yard.

Hell yeah! That's the last of them!

Tips

  • Focus on attacking the red barrels to help in taking out the enemy units near them.
  • Use the Drone Operator's Remote Control Drone ability to scout out the fog and attack barrels or pick off lone targets.
  • Before you take out enemy structures, have the Sentinels switch to their Marking Projectiles and attack the structures so that Intel Intel is obtained. By the time you reach the MCV, you should have accumulated enough Intel to construct the Satellite Uplink.
    • At the Dynasty outpost right before you reach the MCV, you can "farm" for Intel by having the Sentinels and Drone Operators attack the Tempest Miners without destroying the Tempest Rig. Each destroyed Miner yields 2 Intel points, and more Miners will be spawned from the Rig to replace them.
  • During the base building portion, you can move your units near the bridge and issue them to Hold Position to prevent them from running off and attacking the enemy across.
  • Losing your MCV or Construction Yard by either having it destroyed or sold will result in a mission failure.

Behind the scenes

That Tempest Rig, it's getting away!
—Cut Field Scout dialogue, from the Gamescom 2022 demo
  • A modified version of the first GDF mission was featured in the Gamescom 2022 and PAX East 2023 demos that was playable to attendees. It had some key differences to the Playable Preview:
    • The map layout was altered and featured different enemy placements, including a larger presence of Boar tanks.
    • When the player was introduced to the Riot Medic, they were reinforced with a Hunter Tank instead of two Sentinels.
    • The player had access to a larger tech tree, where one could construct a Vehicle Bay to build Sentinels and Hunter Tanks.
    • The player could train multiple Riot Medics.
    • There was dialogue and an objective involving the player chasing down a Tempest Rig.
